I have some white spots on my teeth. My dentist suggested that I use tooth mouse for a while and then have teeth whitening done to complete the process. I’m not getting the results I’d hoped for. Is there something else I should be doing?
Elliot
Dear Elliot,
Your dentist only had part of this right. The tooth mousse was a good idea, but not enough. The teeth whitening won’t really do what you are expecting. This is because it will whiten your teeth evenly, including the white spots. You could do microabrasion, but that does tend to make the teeth look frosty.
The better solution would be to have the white spots ground down a bit and then have dental bonding done to match the rest of your teeth. If you were going to do teeth whitening, I would do it first. Once your teeth are whitened, then you can have dental bonding done to match your new white color.
This is an advanced cosmetic procedure that requires a dentist with advanced cosmetic skills. Your dentist does not understand teeth whitening which is the easiest of the cosmetic procedures. I don’t recommend that you have him do the dental bonding. Instead look for a dentist who has post doctoral training in cosmetic work.
Also, you will want to check out the dentist’s smile gallery, especially their dental bonding cases. This is to make sure that he or she can do beautiful work.
