Does She Need a Root Canal Because of Crest Whitestrips?

Posted on August 13, 2024 by writeradmin.

Years ago, I had a tooth with trauma that knocked it back a bit. I had it fixed by an oral surgeon. Eventually, it turned dark. The gum is also a bit recessed. I asked my dentist about whitening my teeth. He doesn’t do the teeth whitening procedure but did recommend I get some Crest Whitestrips and said that they do whiten teeth slowly. I got a box and used it for seven days. That’s when the formally injured tooth started aching. I stopped using the whitestrips and still another week later it was still hurting. I went to see him and he ran some tests and it appears this tooth now needs a root canal treatment. Was this because I used the whitestrips?

Sandy

Dear Sandy,

Teeth Bleaching Trays

Usually Crest Whitestrips are too weak to do any damage, which is why they are available over the counter instead of through a medical professional. However, this tooth had some additional problems and the whitening gel may have thrown it over the edge.

Your dentist had a misunderstanding of how teeth whitening works. When you whiten your teeth, it whitens the teeth evenly. This tooth, which needed the root canal treatment would not have been affected. This would only make it look worse compared to your other teeth.

As you are going to get a root canal treatment, you will need a dental crown. Please don’t have this crown done by your current dentist. Teeth whitening is one of the easiest cosmetic procedures there is and he did not understand that at all. Getting a dental crown to cover a dark tooth will take a much more advanced cosmetic dentist.

Look for someone with a smile gallery and post-doctoral training in cosmetic work. Then look at the procedures on their smile gallery that are similar to your needs. When they do the crown, they should try it in with a temporary try-in past. You should be able to look at the crown in several types of lighting to make sure it matches well and you love the way it looks. If you don’t, they need to be wiling to redo it.

How Can I Get REALLY White Teeth?

Posted on April 20, 2024 by writeradmin.

I went to my dentist asking about teeth whitening. He does not do the procedure himself but told me that Crest Whitestrips work. I’ve been using them for a while now. While I can tell they are making a small difference. It is very small. I’m looking for a way to get my teeth very white. Is there another product that will do that?

Sandy

Dear Sandy,

Teeth Bleaching Trays

I am glad you wrote. While your dentist is correct that the over-the-counter product, Crest Whitestrips, will whiten your teeth, as you have experienced it does so very slowly. This is because any product you can purchase over-the-counter cannot be very strong for safety reasons.

There are two ways to get really strong teeth. The first is professional teeth whitening. When you have your teeth whitening done, you are under the care of a medical professional who keeps an eye on things. That allows you to get a much stronger gel, which you give you faster results.

A second option is to get porcelain veneers. These are generally used for a complete smile makeover. It’s what all those film stars use in Hollywood. The big benefit to these is that they can change more than your color. They can also remake the size and shape of your teeth, which can completely remake the character of your smile. This is a much more expensive procedure than teeth whitening. You should also be aware that though just about any dentist can do the teeth whitening procedure with no problems, it takes post-doctoral training for a dentist to be able to do porcelain veneers.

The good news is that nothing will get your teeth whiter than persistence using teeth whitening trays. It’s okay that your dentist does not do the procedure. For this, you can go to another dentist to have the whitening done and then return to your dentist for your general dental work.

Lemons and Teeth Whitening

Posted on January 20, 2023 by writeradmin.

Is it possible for me to whiten my teeth at home with lemons? I read about it on a natural health website, but wanted to verify before I wasted a bunch of lemons or, even worse, damaged my teeth. I have not had much success with the over the counter whitening kits and I really want white teeth but my dentist only does Zoom, which is out of my budget.

Megan

Dear Megan,

Lemons

I am so glad you wrote. It was very wise on your part to verify something you read on the internet. While lemons could temporarily make your teeth look a bit whiter, eventually they will actually end up looking darker. This is because lemons have citrus acid. When that acid gets onto your tooth enamel it will micro etch the surface of your teeth. Those etches will cause your teeth to pick up stains much faster. With continued use, you could weaken the enamel of your teeth. You will find that people who suck on lemons have the same problem.

This is the same issue that happens to patients who are suffering from bulimia. The acidic nature of vomiting means that their teeth are slowly wearing away because of all the acid.

If you are determined to use an over the counter whitening kit, Crest Whitestrips do work, but you have to buy a LOT of kits to get the same amount of teeth whitening you could with a dentist.

If you want professional strength teeth whitening but do not want Zoom, you could go to another dentist just to get your teeth whitening kit and get started then return to your dentist for your regular dental care. Be aware that most dentists will make you get a cleaning done before they will whiten your teeth. This is to ensure there are no problems with your teeth. It’s also to make sure there is no plaque that can lead to splotchy results. You can just tell them that you are happy with your dentist for your regular care, but do want to whiten your teeth.

Porcelain Veneers and Teeth Whitening

Posted on August 18, 2022 by writeradmin.

I need to whiten my teeth. Well…I want to whiten my teeth. What worries me is that I have porcelain veneers on only four of my teeth. It’s the teeth next to the porcelain veneers that need the whitening. My smile is about eight teeth wide. I wish I had the money to do more veneers so they’d all match but I didn’t. I want to whiten the teeth to match but I’m worried that the whitening gel will hurt the porcelain veneers. Will I damage them if I use something weak like Crest Whitestrips?

Corinne

Dear Corinne,

teeth bleaching trays

Teeth Bleaching Trays

I am glad you wrote. I wish your dentist would have whitened your teeth before doing your porcelain veneers. That is pretty standard operating procedure when a person can’t get enough veneers to cover the width of their smile. The good news is, while it won’t be as easy, it is still possible to get them whitened.

Crest Whitestrips will not do any damage to your porcelain veneers. In fact, neither will professional strength teeth whitening. If you decide to use the Whitestrips, you need to be aware of some limitations. First, they’re not very big. In fact, they’ll only cover your first six teeth. With four of them being veneered, that would mean you are wasting a significant amount of whitening. With them being only a fraction of the strength of professional whitening, I don’t think you’d be truly satisfied with them.

My suggestion would be to have your dentist make you custom fitted trays that can be shaped around your porcelain veneers. This will enable you to whiten those teeth at full strength, while under the care of a professional. Plus, you can keep the trays and use them for touch-ups every couple of years. Then, you’ll only need the inexpensive gel.

Luster Premium Teeth Whitening

Posted on December 30, 2021 by writeradmin.

I received an advertisement for Luster Premium Home Whitening. It’s a little cheaper than what my dentist’s office quoted when I called them so I am wondering if it actually works and if it is safe.

Emma

Dear Emma,

teeth bleaching trays

Teeth Bleaching Trays

I periodically review these type of things at patients’ requests. While they all have downsides in comparison to professional teeth whitening, most of them have a valid whitening ingredient. In the case of Luster Premium, that is not true. There is not a valid whitening ingredient in this product. The only whitening that takes place with this is due to a pigment in their “super whitener” — zinc oxide. This sticks to the teeth and makes the teeth look temporarily whiter. It does not actually whiten them. The pigment wears off. I am convinced that the positive reviews they have are from people who saw the whitening difference from the pigment and wrote the review not realizing it would quickly wear off.

If cost is the only thing keeping you from getting teeth whitening done by your dentist, you could put some money aside every few weeks or possibly talk to your dentist to see if he or she is open to allowing you to have a payment plan with them. If they say no and you are anxious to do it right away, an over the counter product that works is Crest Whitestrips. It is much weaker than the type of whitening you would get with your dentist but it will work. Another issue is it will only cover the front six teeth. Most smiles are at least eight to ten teeth wide. If that is you, you can use extra strips.

Honestly though, by the time you purchase enough kits to get your teeth really white, you would have spent less money if you would have just saved up and had it done right with your dentist. Plus, you can keep the whitening trays and, in future years, when you need a touch up you will just need to purchase the gel which isn’t nearly as much money.
